A Conversation with our UK Business Development Manager: Discussing Data, Growth and Becoming Market Leaders

Posted on by Smart Solutions

Since our origins in 2007, we have focused heavily on the Waste and Recycling sector and developed our services to ensure that we are leaders within said sector.

One of our main goals in 2023 was to continue to perfect our services and expand our service base. Part of this strategy included the employment of our UK Business Development Manager, Daniel Rainbow. As he approaches his six-month anniversary with the company, we sat down with Dan to discuss his journey so far, and what’s to come.

How has your time been with Smart so far?

The first six months of my employment with Smart have been dedicated to learning our business. Everything from our structure to our services.

Through this, I have been able to identify areas of growth, and have the experience and knowledge to be able to expand our services effectively.

My key learnings so far have been:

  • Insights into the company structure
  • Our national operation and support structure
  • Client base & their service requirements

My initial focus in the business was to collate the data we have and sit down with the different teams to be able to understand our strengths & weaknesses across the UK.

What industries do you want to expand Smart ESS’s services into?

With our extensive knowledge and experience within the waste sector, there are so many different directions we can expand into.

Currently, we support the Waste, Recycling and Utility Sector which is mainly waste collection and processing sites. However, there is so much more potential in our business.

I’d like to see us grow into the scrap metal, auto reclamation & WEEE industry, biogas & AD, biomass & WTE, land remediation & compost operations. Then we can advance onto our biggest growth sector of manufacturing from recycled material like PRF’s, for example.

The knowledge of our teams gives us a huge advantage when looking to expand our services into different sectors, so I am very excited to see where the next few years takes us.

What part will your role play in Smart’s development & growth?

I am currently focusing on the growth of our existing marketplace, whilst exploring the different ways in which we can diversify our service offering to the Waste & Recycling sector.

My role will grow and strengthen our existing and potential client base. I am working alongside the different account managers and teams within the business to be able to understand how we can further support new and existing clients.

Alongside working with the different teams, I am constantly researching the next areas in which we could expand our services. I also work extremely closely with the senior managers within the business to ensure our goals are aligned and we’re on track to achieve the 2023 Smart business goals.

What are you most excited about for your future at Smart?

Everything – the whole journey!

Smart ESS offer a high standard service nationwide, which has enabled us to build strong working relationships with our clients and has allowed us to grow our offering within the marketplace.

Alongside continuing to work with the teams in ESS, I’m excited to see where we can expand our services to, and where we can best apply our knowledge and expertise next.

My overall plans for the future are, broadly speaking, to secure our existing services whilst providing additional services to the Waste & Recycling sector.
